My music life began as the only boy in my Primary School’s Recorder Group and Choir… hey it was a good place to pick up girls! A chance encounter with a Brass Band rekindled my father’s Salvo Band experience, and next thing I know I was in the Box Hill Junior Band as a Tenor Horn player. Within a few years I was deemed to be better than all the old codgers in the Senior Band, and found myself to be on lead Euphonium! From there other opportunities opened up, including Melbourne High School and Melbourne Youth Symphonic Band (where I first met Jack back in 1977). Somehow I landed at the Victorian College of the Arts on Tuba, which then led to a music teaching job in Gippsland for 16 years, during which time I played in a semi-pro Big Band variously on Trumpet, Trombone and Bass Guitar. After that a job opened up at a Melbourne private school, giving me the opportunity to dabble in French Horn (amongst many other great things), and to reconnect with Jack!
Now I’m adding a bit of the Aussie Rock scene into my experience bucket, and lovin’ it!
